The San Andreas fault is one of California’s most dangerous, and is the state’s longest fault.
In terms of Southern California, the last significant earthquake to occur in the southern San Andreas occurred in 1857, when an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 split the earth 185 miles across, between Monterey County and the San Gabriel Mountains, which are close to Los Angeles.
According to the theory of plate tectonics, the San Andreas Fault represents the transform (strike-slip) boundary between two major plates of the Earth’s crust: the Northern Pacific to the south and west and the North American to the north and east.
