World’s Biggest Machine Is Switching On This Year! What Will It Discover?
The Large Hadron Collider will restart after Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) in 2022. The LHC is the biggest particle accelerator in the world. It has made some great contributions to particle physics. Besides discovering the Higgs boson in 2012, the LHC has contributed to the discovery of more than 50 fundamental particles in nature.
Although the discovery of the Higgs boson completed the Standard Model of physics, the purpose of LHC is to look for physics beyond the Standard Model.
The Standard Model does not explain many observed phenomena in the universe. They include dark matter, dark energy, neutrino oscillations, and gravitational force.
One of the major goals of the LHC is to test the theories of physics beyond the Standard Model and for that, we need to push the limits of the collider to higher energies.
