What’s Really Happening At CERN
CERN or the European Organization for Nuclear Research is one of the leading institutes for research and innovation in the world. CERN is situated on the border of France and Switzerland close to Geneva and was founded in 1954 with aims to educate in the field of sub atomic particles and forces. It hosts the LHC which is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator that is 27 km (17 mi) in circumference.
At CERN located in Switzerland, scientists use the LHC to collide particles at energies close to light speed to explore the constituents of matter and to study a phenomenon called the Higgs boson, a particle that provides mass to other particles discovered in the year 2012.
Apart from these pioneering experiments, CERN is known to have nurtured the World Wide Web which was invented in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee to enable sharing information among scientists. In its capacity as an institution of science, CERN thus remains a source of inspiration and a catalyst for the progress of human knowledge in the field of particle physics and other related fields of study.
