What If Water and Land Suddenly Switched Places?

Water and land are two of the important natural resources which exist on earth and they have many relations in order to control lives and structures of the earth. The largest portion of water is in liquid form such as seas, oceans; rivers, lakes and water frozen in ice caps compose about 71% of the earth’s surface and all known life forms require water in some form or another. It controls the climatic system of the planet; sustains the life of various species; and is a necessary factor in human processes.

Seventy-one percent of the total world area is occupied by water bodies while the remaining twenty-nine percent is available as land which supports all forms of life and is characterized by a variety of terrains including the forest, mountains, desert, plains among others.

It supports the existence of millions of species and, in the context of meeting the needs of human societies, it supplies minerals, fertile ground for growing crops, and construction sites. The interface between water and land causes formation of features like the watersheds, wetlands and coastal land which are important natural characteristics for ecological balance. Altruistic studies relate to these natural systems and human activities that put pressures on them such as deforestation, water pollution, climatic change etc.

It remains crucial to recognize and respect the connection between water and land and to advance wise stewardship and protective approaches towards this natural endowment to benefit future generations.
