In late 2014, there was a dimming of ENAs on the side of IBEX facing the sun. This shows that at that time, the heliopause was particularly warped. But Vice says later analysis showed these asymmetries were at odds with the existing model. Further observations noted a major and distinctive change in the heliopause within a comparatively short period. This difference in timing is why the period separating Voyager 1’s first entry into interstellar space in 2012 and Voyager 2’s entry in 2018 is so great.

But the plot thickens further. Voyager data also caused consternation for existing theories, with discoveries of the movements of the heliopause that did not fit accepted models. In an article published in Nature Astronomy, these differences are termed intriguing and potentially controversial by researchers, who admit that more work is needed.
