Termed as ‘Red Planet’, it is the fourth planet from the Sun and is famous for its reddish color due to presence of iron oxide or rust on the planet. This makes the Terrestrial planet unique and preferred by scientists and explorers since it resemble Earth and capable of supporting life.

Faced with such conditions Mars has an impressive number of geological formations that can be listed as follows: Olympus Mons is the biggest volcano in the solar system, Valles Marineris is a canyon system that is much larger than the Grand Canyon. It has thin atmosphere and 95% of it is made of carbon dioxide, the temperatures on Mars vary and there is proof that water used to flow on this planet.

Mars missions of late are aimed at characterization of its surface, geophysical studies as well as the search for biosignatures to prepare for a human mission. Owing to exploration and development, Mars remains an important aspect in the study of planetary evolution and the possibility of existence of life other than on earth.

Liquid Water on Mars: At last the world’s most popular scientists have discovered the existence of liquid water on the red planet. This water reserve located underneath the thick layers of ice in the south pole of the planet offers a possibility that life in some form or the other exists, or existed on the mars.

It was detected with help of a Mars-orbiting radar and is as large as 12 miles wide with the shape of a lake. So it’s not like the lakes that are present on earth; it is extremely salty which is the reason why it doesn’t freeze even at Martian temperatures.
