The Universe’s Largest Structures Have Begun to Spin
There are some of the largest structures in the universe called «cosmic web» which is thread-like structures connecting galaxies, and some of these filaments appear to rotate.
A group of researchers has found out that at least some of these cosmic filaments, which are the largest known formations in the universe, rotate around the axis of the filament in a manner akin to a drill, Nature Astronomy reports. However, as Space. From the com notes, the team has not identified how these filaments started spinning and what sort of force is strong enough to cause spin.
‘We’re not really sure what could cause a torque on this scale,’ study co-author Noam Libeskind, who is a cosmologist at Germany’s Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam told Space. com.
Before, researchers thought that the slow spinning clusters of galaxies turning per their axes are the largest spinning bodies in the universe. Rotation is, however, known to occur, but on a much smaller scale in space, and there isn’t any apparent connection tied to the Big Bang that would have caused the spinning of these enormous filaments bearing in mind their hugeness.
“[Cosmic filaments] are structures so large that galaxies are like grains of dust inside them,” Libeskind said to Space. com. ‘These huge filaments are much much larger than clusters. ’
