The Most Horrifying Tabby’s Star Phenomenon in the Universe
This story began in 2009 when NASA launched the Kepler mission in search for exoplanets, that is, planets outside the solar system. In particular, the satellite studied one region in the sky in the Cygnus and Lyra constellations of our Galaxy. This area is marked with small squares.
The satellite was registering the luminosity of over 150,000 stars for 4 years, recording data every 30 minutes. But how was it looking for planets in the first place? It was looking to catch a moment when a planet would pass between the telescope and the star, leading to a decrease in the star’s luminosity due to a small portion of the stellar light being blocked. What you see here on the graph is a dip in the star’s luminosity.
This research method is called the transit method. But when looking for exoplanets, researchers found one of the most unusual mysteries of our universe. Let’s explain what it is…
