Stunning James Webb Space Telescope image unveiled and more from SXSW 2023
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared space telescope set to launch in late 2021 or early 2022. It is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
The JWST is designed to be the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, and will be able to observe the universe in more detail than any previous space telescope. Its primary mirror is 6.5 meters (21 feet) in diameter, over twice the size of the Hubble’s mirror, and it will be positioned about 1.5 million kilometers (almost a million miles) from Earth in order to avoid interference from our planet’s heat and light.
One of the key goals of the JWST is to observe the first galaxies that formed after the Big Bang, and to study the formation of stars and planetary systems. It will also be able to study the atmospheres of exoplanets in detail, which could provide clues about the potential habitability of those planets.
The JWST has been in development for over two decades and has faced several delays and cost overruns. However, scientists and engineers are excited about the potential of the telescope and the discoveries it could make once it is launched.
NASA and ESA have unveiled James Webb Space Telescope’s view of Wolf-Rayet star WR 124 at SXSW 2023 and discuss the observatory’s impact.
