SpaceX Polaris Dawn Astronauts Set for 1st Private Spacewalk on September 12

The historic action is expected to start at 5:58 a.m. ET on Thursday (Sept. 12).

The first-ever private spacewalk is to commence from early Thursday morning that is September 12th itself and people who are interested can watch it live.

This historic EVA will be performed by Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis of the four-astronaut Polaris Dawn crew, which was launched into Earth orbit using the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at the start of Tuesday (September 10).

Elon Musk’s space firm SpaceX says that the spacewalk will start at 5:58 a. m. Eastern Standard Time or 0958 GMT. That’s why you can watch the entire event live on Space. com or directly through SpaceX hence proving that the company develops scientific innovations that are practical and sustainable. It will air near 4:58 a. m. EDT (0858 GMT).

The extravehicular activity is believed to take about two hours from the time the mission’s Crew Dragon capsule vent is opened, till when it is closed again as per SpaceX and Polaris Dawn team.

This is because unlike other spacecraft such as the space shuttles, Crew Dragon has no airlock which means no part of the craft remains exposed to space’s vacuum during an EVA. Therefore, each crew member of the flight, Isaacman, Gillis, Scott “Kidd” Poteet, and Anna Menon, will don their newly designed SpaceX EVA suits.

But only Isaacmen and Gillis will have to leave the capsule. They will do so one by one, and each will remain outside for 15-20 minutes, as Isaacman said during a pre-launch press conference on August 26th. Both will continue to interface with Crew Dragon, using the new “Skywalker” handrails and other fixtures on the craft that will retain the astronauts.

Isaacman – “This time we won’t just be floating around”.

The goal of the spacewalk is to evaluate the new SpaceX suits that were designed in the company and should be used for different missions: in Earth orbit and other orbits.

On August 26 Isaacman had the following to say regarding SpaceX and Axiom space’s mission: “It’s not lost on us that while we don’t know what this is just the start there will be many more evolutions and iterations in the future and one day somebody will be wearing a version of this suit while walking on Mars. ” “There is something that I have been waiting for to try on this mission that I feel has such a great honor. ”
