Something’s Started Happening in the Clouds of Neptune | Our Solar System’s Planets
Neptune presents several layers of clouds, mainly composed of hydrogen, and is a member of the group of ice giants, which is over 4 billion kilometers away from the Sun.
Unlike the white puffy clouds found on earth, Neptune’s clouds are formed by methane and other hydrocarbons, and hence have a blue tinge to match the planet’s color.
These clouds are not permanent structures and are constantly changing due to the high speed of the fastest wind in the solar system, which could be as fast as 2100 Km/h. Rainsheds, hazes, and other formations make Neptune’s atmosphere constructed of thin filaments at the upper layer and larger formations at deeper layers.
A few bright bands of various shades of brown and red and a large dark oval feature which resembles the great red spot indicate storms and vortices in the planet’s atmosphere.
These fast-moving, enigmatic clouds make Neptune one of the most alluring and mystifying planets in our solar system.
