Shocking! Something Is Wrong with Pluto!
Pluto, the once-considered ninth planet in our solar system, has a fascinating story. Discovered in 1930 by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, Pluto was classified as a planet for around 75 years until 2006, when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the criteria for what constitutes a planet.
Pluto didn’t meet these new criteria—it didn’t clear its orbit of other debris and was much smaller than initially thought. As a result, it was reclassified as a “dwarf planet.” It’s the largest known member of the Kuiper Belt, a region of the solar system beyond Neptune that contains many icy bodies.
Despite its small size (smaller than our Moon) and distance from Earth, Pluto has intrigued scientists due to its unique characteristics. It has a thin atmosphere primarily composed of nitrogen, with traces of methane and carbon monoxide. Its surface is icy and varied, featuring plains, mountains, and a heart-shaped region called Tombaugh Regio.
Robotic spacecraft like NASA’s New Horizons have provided incredible images and data about Pluto, revealing a diverse and geologically active world, challenging previous assumptions about distant icy bodies in our solar system.
Scientists are up in arms over the latest images of a small planet at the very edge of the solar system. It’s shocking, something is wrong with Pluto!
Why is the dwarf planet suddenly showing unexpected activity on its surface? Could it be home to life after all and what’s the deal with the moon Charon, which may not be a real moon at all?
