Dark matter is a form of matter that does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it invisible and detectable indirectly through its gravitational effects. It is called “dark” because it does not interact with electromagnetic forces, which include the wavelengths of light that we can observe. Despite being invisible, dark matter is believed to make up approximately 27% of the total mass and energy content of the universe.

The existence of dark matter was first proposed by Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky in the 1930s. He observed that the visible matter (stars and galaxies) in galaxy clusters could not account for the gravitational forces holding those clusters together. The amount of visible matter was simply not sufficient to explain the observed gravitational effects.
