There are still the world’s most top scientists who are puzzled how come our universe did not self-destruct as soon as it was born. This is what science tells us should have occurred and, to our knowledge, it has not at all. As postulated by the standard model, the universe started with both matter and anti-matter in equal measure. The issue is that they would have killed each other and wiped out all signs of the situation that we have today.

Scientists have been eagerly looking for a difference between matter and anti-matter that would help explain the existence of the known universe.

But they tried a bunch of variations including having different masses, electric charges, or anything else one can imagine, and nothing changed. This has led several scholars to ask why the universe is still existing in the first place. “And all of our observations are symmetric between matter and antimatter, which is why the universe should not exist,” pointed out Christian Smorra, the author of recent CERN work.

There has to be asymmetry somewhere, but we don’t know where the difference lies. What is the reason for the symmetry breaking?The newest idea was that matter and antimatter had distinct magnetisms. But new work shows that they are also similar in this respect, thereby adding to the mystery of why the universe is here in the first place.

This study conducted by Dr. Smorra wanted to determine the anti-protons that exist and how they compare to the protons in our environment. They probed the magnetization of antimatter in greater detail than any before them and were startled to find that matter and antimatter seemed to be precisely the same.

Anti-matter cannot be stored in a physical cage, but scientists at CERN utilized the ‘Penning traps’ to capture the anti-protons. Stefan Ulmer, a spokesperson for the group of academics that undertook the study stated that ‘This tremendous increase within such a short period of time was only possible due to completely new methods’.

The researchers hope they will be able to explore the anti-protons in more depth and perhaps see a difference when they are studying the mystery further. Other scientists on the other hand are thinking of the following possibilities including the fact that anti-matter has its gravitational field inverted in such a way that it will tend to fall upwards as reported in Cosmos Magazine.
