New study finds potential alien mega-structures known as ‘dyson spheres’

Alien megastructures are large, speculative structures intended to extract, control or support extraterrestrial energy sources or society .

These structures which authors consider to be the structures from science-fiction films can be constructed around stars, planets or other celestial objects that would gather enormous amounts of energy to support super-technologies or the extraterrestrial life.

Dyson Sphere – named after physicist Freeman Dyson – might surround a star with a shell or a group or solar Power Satellites capturing star’s output. As with all forms of speculation about alien life, the notion of alien megastructures creates interest in the possible technology possessed by such civilizations, as well as how they might survive the vastness of the universe.

They also reshape our perception of the engineering, the laws of physics and the potential of human mind.

A group of researchers have identified at least seven stars that might be surrounded by advanced alien mega-structures known as “dyson spheres.” NBC News’ Ellison Barber speaks with Janna Levin, a professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College, about the findings and whether the truth is out there.
