NASA Spinoff 2013 Demonstrates the Ubiquity of Space in Our Daily Lives.

Water filtration bottles, comfortable car seats, and remote medical monitoring devices are just a few examples of products that have greatly benefited from NASA technology. These innovative creations are highlighted in Spinoff 2013, an online publication that showcases commercial products developed using NASA-developed technology. The publication features a wide range of products, including an air purification system that can support miners during disasters, a solar-powered vaccine refrigerator that saves lives in remote areas, and a powerful heat shield used in the first successful commercial spacecraft mission.

According to Daniel Lockney, NASA’s Technology Transfer program executive, NASA’s technologies not only push the boundaries of what is possible in space but also improve our lives on Earth. Spinoff 2013 provides numerous examples of how NASA technology positively impacts our daily lives.

NASA has a long-standing tradition of transferring technologies from their original mission applications to other practical uses. The exploration of Mars, for instance, has led to various terrestrial benefits. Spinoff 2013 shares stories about these technologies, including a wind turbine that could potentially provide energy for future human missions to Mars and is currently being used in challenging environments on Earth.

This year, Spinoff introduces a new section called “Spinoffs of Tomorrow,” which showcases 18 NASA technologies available for licensing and partnership opportunities. This section highlights the ongoing commitment of NASA to innovation and collaboration.

NASA’s Technology Transfer Program is charged with finding the widest possible applications of agency technologies Through partnerships and licensing agreements with industry, the program ensures NASA’s investments in pioneering research find secondary applications that benefit the economy, create jobs, and improve quality of life.
