NASA Just Opened the Largest Asteroid Sample, but Saw Unexpected Things Inside!
In January 2022, the largest asteroid in our solar system is Ceres. Ceres is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and is classified as a dwarf planet. It was also the first dwarf planet to be visited by a spacecraft, NASA’s Dawn mission, which orbited Ceres from March 2015 to November 2018.
Ceres has a diameter of about 590 miles (940 kilometers) and comprises a significant portion of the mass in the asteroid belt. Its size and shape make it distinct from other objects in the asteroid belt, and its composition is believed to include a mixture of water ice and rock.
It’s worth noting that there are many other large asteroids in the solar system, and new discoveries may have occurred since my last years
Would you believe me if I told you that we all came to Earth piggybacking on an asteroid? NASA just opened the largest sample of asteroid rock and saw unexpected things inside that could prove just that! But the OSIRIS-Rex mission was much more than that.
Thanks to probes like this one, we will soon build the perfect asteroid defense to protect our precious life on Earth.
