NASA Image Captures an Exceptionally Early Black Hole

In July 2015, a team of researchers made an announcement regarding the discovery of a black hole. This black hole, depicted in the illustration above, exhibited an unusually rapid growth rate compared to its host galaxy.

This groundbreaking discovery challenges the previously held assumptions about the evolution of galaxies. Initially, the black hole was identified using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Subsequently, it was also detected through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, as well as ESA’s XMM-Newton and NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

Benny Trakhtenbrot, along with an international group of astrophysicists from ETH Zurich’s Institute for Astronomy, conducted a follow-up observation of this black hole. Utilizing the 10-meter Keck telescope situated in Hawaii, they were taken aback by the findings. The data collected with a novel instrument unveiled a colossal black hole within a seemingly ordinary, distant galaxy known as CID-947.
