How Will Artificial Intelligence Take Us To The Stars?
Do you remember this sentence? “On August 4th, 1997, computers became self-aware, and 25 days later, they began their mission to exterminate the human race.”
Well, if you’re not living in a post-apocalyptic bunker today, it’s only because science fiction doesn’t always get its predictions right, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence. Luckily, no Skynet is ruling the world today (although there is a facial recognition program called that in China). And it’s highly unlikely that Siri and Alexa will become sentient and start asking us to answer all their questions.
The more or less casual use of artificial intelligence, often abbreviated as AI, is a constant in every science fiction movie featuring a spaceship, control center, or some robots… starting with the most famous intelligence of all, HAL 9000, who refuses to let astronaut David Bowman back on board because he knows he intends to deactivate him… Representing one of humanity’s greatest fears about the progress of technology: can a machine become sentient and decide for itself what is right and what is wrong?
