Elon Musk’s Response to Solid-State Batteries: “A Production Nightmare!”

Solid-state batteries, a technology that offers more energy density, quicker charging times, and improved safety over conventional lithium-ion batteries, are generating a lot of excitement in the electric vehicle (EV) market. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has, nevertheless, voiced doubts over the level of solid-state battery technology at the moment. And so, in today’s episode, we’ll find out why the tech billionaire thinks solid-state batteries are “production hell.”

Musk has emphasized the difficulties in scaling the technology for mass production while also acknowledging the theoretical benefits of solid-state batteries. While solid-state batteries have a lot of potential, there are still major technological obstacles that must be cleared before they can be made economically feasible, as Musk has noted in several public appearances, such as Tesla’s earnings calls and his personal X account.

He has frequently underlined the significance of the production process and the requirement that any new battery technology be produced in large quantities with consistent quality. Musk is still focused on developing innovations like Tesla’s 4680 battery cells, which are intended to deliver five times more energy and six times more power than earlier cells along with a 16% increase in range, in order to advance lithium-ion technology and lower production costs.

Tesla has adopted an approach under Musk’s leadership that focuses on keeping an eye on new breakthroughs while gradually advancing current battery technologies. Musk may still be hesitant about the technology’s suitability for the EV industry, as seen by the fact that Tesla has not yet made any plans to switch to solid-state batteries.

However, Gigafactories for solid-state batteries are here!

Although the development of solid-state batteries was not anticipated to occur until the end of the decade, it appears that it is happening already. The novel technology is positioned as an advancement beyond the traditional lithium-ion electric vehicle batteries. Increased recycling possibilities, longer lifespan, quicker charging, increased safety, less supply chain risk, and greater range are all benefits of solid-state batteries.

The most recent information about solid-state batteries comes from Taiwan, where ProLogium, a startup, is already preparing to ship its giga-scale solid-state battery line to electric car manufacturers this year from its Taoke factory in Taoyuan. There are also exciting plans to build a second facility in France.

The key concern is how to produce solid-state batteries on a large scale and at a reasonable cost. It seems Prologium has provided an answer to that issue. The French operation will gain from the knowledge gained at the Taoke factory when it goes online.

The business said in a press release today that “Breaking the industry’s previous perception of solid-state battery production is highly challenging and costly.”
