Earth’s Water Predates the Sun, Revolutionizing Our Understanding of the Universe

The role of water in the formation of stars and planets cannot be overestimated, as water is one of the most significant components in this process. Attempts have been made to relate water in the interstellar medium such as protostar V883 Orion, with water in our solar system. This discovery entails that water on our planet has to be billions of years older than the star it is orbiting.

John Tobin an astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory has used the word trail to refer to the passage of water through space. Recent work published in Nature reveals that water found on earth can be dated back to the interstellar medium. The study has expanded the knowledge of researchers as it seems that the ratio of deuterium to hydrogen in the water molecules of V883 Orion is comparable to that of the solar system.

This new finding transforms past assumptions since there was no way that scientists could link protostars with comets before. There is liquid water on V883 Orion, this means that the path of water in the cosmos according to Tobin is longer and older than was earlier imagined.

It is known that the bulk of the water in the interstellar medium forms as ice on the surfaces of tiny dust grains in the clouds. When these clouds collapse under their own gravity and form young stars, the water ends up in the disks around them. Eventually, the disks evolve, and the icy dust grains coagulate to form a new solar system with planets and comets. We have shown that water that is produced in the clouds follows this trail virtually unchanged. So, by looking at the water in the V883 Ori disk, we essentially look back in time and see how our own solar system looked when it was much younger.

In this paper it will explore a unique observation that astronomers made with the help of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). They have discovered that V883 Ori, an astronomical source, perfectly radiated the amount of energy needed to evaporate ice, and this led to brand new forms of investigation.

To bring some relation between V883 Ori and our own solar grouping, the composition of the former was studied carefully. They were quite surprised to discover that at this period of its evolution its chemical composition did not radically change from what it was during its protostar phase, the protoplanetary disk , or even comets.

This discovery can have serious implications for our theory about water in the solar system. Ms Merel van ‘t’Hoff an Astronomer at the University of Michigan and part to the authors of the study notes that water in the solar system was created before formation of the sun and the planets and comets. The water ice which was distributed in interstellar medium is said to have disappeared into the solar system in the early stages of its formation. This revelation is interesting since it indicates that Earths were not the only structures to receive a large amount of water.

It can be stated that this discovery helped scientists reach a better understanding of the formation of Earth. In the development of our solar system, Tobin noted that there was a chain of water which has been now being unbundled. Nevertheless, we are still missing an unbroken fishing line of water from comets and protostars in particularly to the ISM, and this is where V883 Ori, also referred to as Ori, fills a void.

In all, this discovery helps enlighten the intricate processes that defined our solar systems and provided insights to the formation of planet earth.
