Astronomers have discovered the quickest-growing black hole, devouring a mass equivalent to that of the sun every 48 hours.

Astonishing details uncovered recently by a group of astronomers from Australian National University revealed the detection of the fastest-growing black hole in existence. This supermassive black hole also called as quasar was identified by using data from the SkyMapper telescope.

According to the data obtained from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite this body is immensely far from our solar system. What is more, it was shown that the light now reaching our planet was emitted 12 billion years ago – quite a record for any object.

Most interestingly, this quasar emits light more brightly than any other seen in optical and ultraviolet regions. According to Christian Wolf, a scientist at the university’s astronomy department who led the research, the radiation from the heat produced by the matter consumed by the black hole is thousands of times brighter than the Milky Way galaxy we are residing in.

It calls existing science into question

This discovery shakes the existing knowledge of the existence and characteristics of black holes. Black holes are also limited by their speed, which is directly proportional to their mass and that affects their expansion rate. At the moment, this giant black hole is as massive as at least twenty billion suns. Applying the speed limit equation, Wolf concluded that this black hole was born from no more than 5,000 suns in size about 1. It is estimated to have occurred approximately two billion years after the big bang.

The average black hole is about fifty suns in diameter. Astronomers are surprised by the high rate of increase of this huge black hole. Therefore, black holes could possibly grow beyond the speed limit – a phenomenon that still remains a mystery and has not been witnessed or there must be another unexamined way of creating 5,000 solar mass black holes shortly after the Big Bang as Wolf had it before the listeners.

The beginning of the universe is still a mystery to this day. According to Wolf, this discovery could prove to be useful in gaining further understanding of the Big Bang.

The hunt is on to learn more

“What happened there but is not included in the current conventional model?”Wolf surmises that there are other even larger black holes out there in the universe. However, this discovery proves that there are actually bright and distant quasars that were overlooked by scientists before.

But as they progress, they seem to get more questions. “The hunt is on,” Wolf added. “Our goal is to understand the demography of growing supermassive black holes and find out the scale of the problem that we face. ”
