Astrobiologists propose that Earth could possess a sentient nature and exhibit signs of consciousness.

A team of scientists have presented a captivating — and truly thought-provoking — hypothetical scenario: If Earth-like planet can be qualified as living, then can it have its own consciousness?

The researchers tried to answer this question in their work published in the International Journal of Astrobiology. They came up with the concept of “planetary intelligence” which means the intelligence of an entire planet.

Although this concept may sound futuristic and inspired by a movie, there are some scientists who think that it can be helpful in the search for aliens and use for solving problems like climate change.

The team suggested that vast interconnected ecosystems could create a huge subterranean mind that exerts a powerful influence on the global condition, referring to subterranean mycoral networks.

They noted that humans are now one of the leading species causing this change and that our activity may be causing the planet’s balance to shift in a way that cannot be undone because of issues such as the plastic problem and global warming.

According to the study, the coauthor Adam Frank, a physics professor at the University of Rochester, discussed this as follows: “We are not yet capable of collectively responding in the planet’s best interests. ”

The researchers propose that such theoretical scenarios assist those people to understand their impact on the earth and guidance on how to enhance it. They also agree that it could help in the search for alien life.

“What we are proposing is that the only possible technological civilizations we might meet, the only ones we should expect, are those that did not destroy themselves, which suggests that they must have achieved a real planetary wisdom,” Frank said.

“This is the significance of this research direction,” he added. “It contains the knowledge needed to begin resolving the climate crisis and what would happen on any planet that has life forms and intelligence.
