Are “Grabby Aliens” Consuming the Universe?
‘‘Grabby Aliens’ is a term used to denote a possible class of ET civilizations which are expansionist and growing very fast across the galaxy. These civilizations, instigated by technological advancement and procurement of resources would migrate through space at nearly one tenth the speed of light, transforming planets, milking stars and creating permanent scars in the cosmic canvas.
The concept suggests that if such civilizations exist, their expansion would eventually become observable from Earth, either through direct encounters or by detecting the vast, engineered structures they leave behind. This idea plays into the Fermi Paradox, offering a potential explanation for why we have yet to encounter alien life—if “Grabby Aliens” are out there, their presence would dominate the galaxy, possibly outpacing or overshadowing emerging civilizations like our own.
There are many possible solutions to the Fermi Paradox but a few have risen to particular prominence – including the “Grabby Aliens” hypothesis. Today, we’ll explore what this solution proposes, what it assumes, and ultimately three reasons why I personally don’t think it’s right.
