A theory proposes that the past, present, and future coexist simultaneously
Surprisingly, Your Past, Present, and Future Could Be Happening Right Now, All at the Same Time
The block universe theory has it that time is actually at rest and does not actually elapse in the same way that one may possibly perceive; it points to the fact that all time is actually at once and is made up of four dimensions. This has a tendency of altering the historical perspective that time is a line segment. Dr. Kristie Miller postulated that one may be able to flip through time and be able to go to the past and or future but not as a time traveler where you can change things; that is, one will be playing out an already scripted role. Opponents found out that the future cannot be predetermined, while some of them, the believers in the growing block universe theory for instance, pointed to the fact that spacetime is actually increasing and the present time is actually the skin of this growing block. In the meantime, this theory is changing the human perception of time and existence in the frame of the ongoing discussion.
Most of the time we can correlate time as a straight line; always advancing and going forward. We have no control on the time and could not switch over to the future or go back to the past. It appears that every second which passes is dragging us towards its fatal conclusion. But would it be possible, if past and present and future were all at once contemporaneous? According to this perspective, time wouldn’t exist at all as it exists within this particular paradigm.
One of the theories known is the block universe theory that compares the universe with a four-dimensional block of spacetime in which all events that have taken place in the universe and all that will take place are already existent according to Dr. Kristie Miller of the University of Sydney who is the co-director of the Centre for Time.
In this particular model, there is no present state or present time in fact, no specific time at all. Everything occurs in relations of four spatial and one time dimensions. Thus, seeing blocks as more than just layman’s interpretations of spacetime reveals that our present is merely the current state in the block universe. Looking at the notion of ‘time’, the ‘past’ means earlier segments while the ‘future’ means the consecutive segments.
Thus one is given the question: Is time nothing more than a beautiful fiction? More critically though, is the question of whether or not time travel is possible?
According to the general relativity theory by Dr. Miller, it is bear in mind hypothetically even though to travel around the massive celestial body we have to travel at “some reasonable %age of the speed of light. ” If at all, one can travel in the past courtesy of wormholes through which one is privileged to traverse spacetime shortcuts.
However if you could go back in time you actually can’t do anything about it. You would just be following through what has been predetermined and since past and future are relative to each other, your actions would simply be bringing to reality those events. That is why one way or another the paradoxes such as ‘grandfather paradox’ would not be a problem : your time travel has always been a part of the history.
“If I go back in time then I am in the past,” as Miller said it. As I have mentioned, I was always part of the past of the company.
It also means that time travelers are also already existent in the current period saying and changing history. But according to Miller the statement made by him suggests that maybe the past is like it is due to the time travellers.
According to this view, what one does tomorrow is a creation of the future and one is just as a player in what is predetermined. This puts into question the notion that time is actually ‘moving’ and maybe means this: time doesn’t exist, or rather we don’t exist in time.
Some have also pointed out that there are certain counterarguments that are used against supporters of the block universe theory pointing out that, the future should not exist. Physicist Lee Smolin is of the view that, “The future is not now real and there can be no definite facts about the future” He also asserted, “What is real is the process which produces the future from the present. ”
One question with it is – if time is indeed block then how does progress happen? In response to this problem, the new block universe model developed with the growth of the philosophy argues that spacetime is not static but rather increases in size as time elapses. The growing wedge is the current state of affairs and as the cosmologist George Ellis put it “Where the vagaries of the future are replaced by the realities of the past. ”
As we wait for the verdict to come, the block universe theory continue to be the best thought out solution to the contradiction when time is compared to the cosmological and our own day to day experience. What is beyond doubt is that time is not half as simple as we are given to believe and untangling its secrets might very well be the ticket to understanding life.
