A black hole discovered rotating at near light-speed, possibly spinning space itself.

A Black Hole in the Milky Way is Spinning Near the Speed of Light, Scientists Confirm

NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory with support from India’s AstroSat has determined that a black hole in binary star system 4U 1630-47 is rotating about as fast as possible, in other words, at the speed of light. This is a unique black hole of its kind and its spin rate as shown below is 0. 9 Its spin rate of 9, is one of only five that are known to spin this fast, and they may hold key to understanding formation of galaxies. Adding to the total of the 20 astronomically recognised black holes in Milky Way, the discovery is a massive contribution to astrophysics.

This article will take your breath away as it explains the now measured velocity of a black hole and how this affects the understanding of galaxy formation. Please proceed to discuss with us below the comment section!

Black holes have been in the limelight from time to time, but a black hole which rotates at one of the most rapid rates according to the recent report that appeared in the Hindustan times is quite different and unusual as only four such black holes have been discovered so far.

India’s first space dedicated telescope, AstroSat discovered, in 2016, a black hole in 4U 1630-47, a binary star system which emitted irregular X-rays.

Later on, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory affiliated to NASA corroborated this outburst.

The X-rays were created when the gas and dust are pulled into the black hole, which has a mass about 10 times that of the sun and images from the emissions helped the researchers determine that the black hole is spinning at a very high rate.

This black hole is rotating incredibly close to the maximum speed that Einstein’s theory of relativity would allow, said study lead author Rodrigo Nemmen of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais in Brazil. What this implies is that it must be rotating at a speed which is almost equivalent to that of light.

At the present, black hole’s can only be characterized by two parameters: its mass or its spin speed. There are no values for spin rates; this black hole has a spin rate of 0 to 1 and this black hole spin is 0. 9.

It also becomes apparent that according to the theory posited by Einstein, space could be spinning too should black hole revolve at a speed as fast as 99 percent.
If so, then the high spin rate, associated with the inflowing gas, and the extreme temperatures may supply valuable information about galaxy formation.

Out of all the black holes the one found by AstroSat, the spin rates have only been measured in five black holes precisely. Even neglecting spin rates for this black hole it is one of only twenty observed within the Milky Way galaxy.

ISRO’s AstroSat and NASA’s Chandra X-ray observations have corroborated this spinning speed of this black hole.

The study was carried out by a group that comprised members from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research TIFR and submitted for publication in Astrophysical Journal.
