Did Scientists Discover Alien Mega-Structures?
A Dyson sphere is a hypothetical structure that is believed to encircle a star and harness a large portion of the star’s energy to sustain the energy demands of a post-scarcity society.
This idea was proposed by the physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960 and refers to a solution to the energy needs of a civilization that is classified as Type II in the Kardashev Scale that defines the advancement of a civilization according to the energy it is able to harness.
Dyson sphere could be a solid shell, a swarm of solar collecting satellites or a number of habitats and energy collectors orbiting a star. It would be impossible to build a solid shell; however, the Dyson swarm seems like a more reasonable solution wherein there are many separate solar panels or living spaces. Dyson spheres are a popular subject in sci-fi movies as they represent the pinnacle of technological achievement and the ability to capture stellar power at a degree never seen before. While at the present moment it remains a speculation, Dyson spheres are searched in infrared data as signals indicating the presence of such structures around certain stars.
Did scientists find Dyson spheres around stars? Neil deGrasse Tyson explores what an alien civilization might look like to us, the Kardashev Scale, and Dyson Spheres.
Learn what researchers found around previously discovered stars. We break down the Kardashev Scale and what to look for when detecting alien civilizations. Plus, learn about Freeman Dyson and how he thought a Type II Civilization might work.
