The Countdown Begins: Could Betelgeuse Go Supernova Tomorrow?
Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star located in Orion constellation at an approximate distance of 642 light years from the solar system. Orion is actually one of the brightest stars in the night sky and is easily recognizable, and is the star that represents the left shoulder of the Orion constellation. Betelgeuse is another giant star with a diameter 700 times of its Sun and at present, in post-main sequence phase.
Because Betelgeuse is a red supergiant it has swelled and has actually turned into somewhat of a red giant hence the name. Astronomers estimate that it should explode as a supernova in the next 100000 years; the supernova would be seen throughout the day and night on the Earth.
It has gained more popularity in recent years due to the appearance of its mass in early 2019 and at the beginning of 2020 due to the cooling of its surface coat and emission of dust shells. It is unpredictable and after some time, it will burst into a supernova; studies on it give details of the evolution of stars and the stages of the evolution of the big stars.
See Betelgeuse go supernova, a stellar event whereby this star outshines the moon we could see it during the day!
