In about 5 billion years, the Sun will begin to transform into a so-called Red giant. Its outer gas shell will swell, and when it reaches its maximum size and brightness, in 7 billion years, it will engulf Earth and the other inner planets.
The problem for us Earthlings, however, will become serious as early as the next billion years, when the Sun’s brightness will have increased by about 10 percent.
Our planet’s polar ice caps will begin to melt and the oceans will begin to warm. Then the water in the oceans will slowly evaporate into the atmosphere and the climate will be disrupted.
As water vapor blocks the infrared radiation emitted by the planet, it will trigger an increasing greenhouse effect, as on Venus, which will make our planet increasingly hotter and wetter.
With Earth tens of degrees warmer than the current average, the situation will become hostile for life. The oceans will be the only safe place where some life forms can perhaps survive, but only for a couple of billion years.
So we only have a billion years left to think about a possible solution–face extinction? Migrate? Or perhaps, will it be better to move away with the whole planet to an outermost orbit?

The question arises after watching “The Wandering Earth,” a Chinese science fiction film in which, to escape a larger and hotter Sun than today, humanity builds a series of giant engines along the equator, thanks to whose thrust the Earth abandons its orbit around the Sun and sets off toward Alpha Centauri.
