It originates from the Armenian mountains in Eastern Turkey and flows through steep gorges and canyons in Turkey, then through lowlands in Syria before entering the Persian Gulf. It is the longest river in Asia.
The only other river similar to the Euphrates in age and purpose is the River Tigris
