The Largest Underwater Volcano is Cracking Open & Could Cause Global Catastrophe

The largest underwater volcano in the world is believed to be Tamu Massif, located in the northwest Pacific Ocean, east of Japan. Tamu Massif is an extinct submarine shield volcano that covers an area of approximately 120,000 square kilometers (46,000 square miles), making it nearly the size of the state of New Mexico.

It is estimated to have formed around 145 million years ago and is believed to be one of the largest volcanoes in the solar system. Despite its size, Tamu Massif was only recently discovered and its origins and geology are still being studied by scientists.

Underwater or submarine volcanoes are fissures where lava can erupt that are primarily submerged under the oceans of the Planet. Underwater volcanoes function essentially in the same way as their surface counterparts.
