8 MINUTES AGO: Voyager 1 Made Contact With Unknown Force In Deep Space
Voyager 1 is a space probe launched by NASA in 1977 as part of the Voyager program. Its primary mission was to study the outer Solar System and its planetary systems, including Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
After completing its primary mission, Voyager 1 continued to explore the outer regions of the Solar System and eventually became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space, the region beyond the heliosphere where the solar wind gives way to the interstellar medium.
Voyager 1 carries a number of scientific instruments, including cameras, plasma detectors, magnetometers, and cosmic ray detectors, which have provided valuable information about the outer planets, their moons, and the surrounding space environment.
As of 2021, Voyager 1 is still operational and continues to communicate with Earth from a distance of over 14 billion miles (22.8 billion kilometers) away. Despite its vast distance from Earth, scientists are still able to receive data from the spacecraft and continue to study the interstellar medium and the boundary between our Solar System and the rest of the galaxy.
The Voyager twin spacecraft from NASA has turned into time capsules for their generation. They have an eight-track tape recorder for data storage and about 3 million times less memory than modern cell phones. They also transmit data at a rate that is about 38 000 times slower than a 5G internet connection.
