5 Hypotheses About Life On Mars
Is there life on Mars? The evidence gathered so far has been inconclusive, with proclamations and denials following one another relentlessly. So much so that the attention of planetary scientists is now shifting in other directions.
Although the Apollo missions have shown that the nearest destination, the Moon, is a dry world without any form of life, other worlds in our solar system may indeed hold surprises for us in the near future.
Do you remember the discovery of phosphine, which was partially disproved and is still the subject of scientific debate? Well, according to some hypotheses, Venus could host bacterial life among the clouds in its upper atmosphere. Europa and Enceladus could be teeming with life in their internal oceans of liquid water. Even the lakes of liquid hydrocarbons on Titan offer some intriguing possibilities for the search for exotic life.
But in this respect, despite the recurring disappointments, Mars remains the planetary environment to which we direct our greatest expectations. A well-earned confidence? Only partly, unfortunately. But this does not prevent us from formulating hypotheses in an attempt to rationalize the problem.
Let’s try to see how!
